For the second year in a row, Fortnite was the main event at the annual Summer Smash held at the Australian Open from Saturday, February 1 - Sunday, February 2, 2020. Last year’s event was one of the best Fortnite tournaments, with players from all over the world flying in to partake in the competition. This year's Australian Open Summer Smash Featuring Fortnite was no exception, with $400,000 on the line for the solos portion of the event.

Players such as Benjyfishy and G FUEL-sponsored Replays from FaZe Clan were all in attendance. Along with the solos competition of the event, there was a $100,000 Pro-Am for charity, which has become a staple at Fortnite events.

So who came out on top? We’ll go through both days of the competition and share some of the best plays of the weekend.

Pro-Am Results 

Saturday’s event was all about the Pro-Am for charity. The majority of Fortnite events nowadays seem to feature acharity component, so it was nice to see! Instead of the usual duos, this one featured trios playing for their chosen foundation. Last year’s Pro-Am winners MrFreshAsian, Lachlan, and Enschway were in attendance, as they looked to win back-to-back Pro-Am titles.

In the days leading up to the event, the organizers announced some notable teams that would be competing, including the following teams:

• Mitch Robinson, Slaya, and Mau
• LazarBeam, Dave Hughes, and Rel

The event was widely considered one of the most entertaining Pro-Ams to date. With a high combination of pro players and talented celebrities, trios was the perfect game mode for this. One of the best clips from the Pro-Am was this spectacular grenade play by Benjyfishy’s team.

As you can tell by Fortnite caster Ballatw’s reaction, this was one of the best plays we could have imagined to see from this Pro-Am. At the end of the day, none other than MrFreshAsian, Lachlan, and Enschway came out on top, which means they earned $100,000 for charity and are this year’s Pro-Am champions.

Solos Results

The most anticipated event of the weekend was the solos portion. With $400,000 on the line and professional players from across the globe flying in for the event, it was an event to watch for sure. With players like Zexrow, Benjyfishy, EpikWhale, and others in attendance, fans had a lot to look forward to during the event.

The tournament took place over six matches, the same number of matches that was allocated for the 2019 Fortnite World Cup. This was the scoring format:

• Victory Royale: +10 points
• 2nd-5th: +7 point
• 6th-15th: +5 point
• 16th-25th: +3 point
• Each Elimination: +1 point

History was made during the Australian Open. In what was a surprise to many fans, this was the first time a controller player won a LAN tournament. Breso pulled off a Victory Royale in the final match of the event, which all but secured his place atop the leaderboards.
